Though this work is called a tenmoku tea bowl, its shape no longer conforms to that of the tenmoku (Ch., Tianmu) style made in China. The green glaze used for this bowl bears no relation to that of the tenmoku tea bowls with green glaze produced by the Jian kiln, but is related, rather, to the Oribe ware of the Momoyama period (1573-1615), during which copper green glaze was popularly applied.
