Black-glazed ceramics fired at kilns in northern China are popularly known as Honan Tenmoku in Japan. These bowls, however, were not necessarily produced in Henan Province, but were manufactured in the areas extending to the north of the Yellow River. As in this bowl, persimmon-colored spots on a black ground are typical.
