The characteristic shape of the lugs and the convex band around the upper half of the body are typical features of Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) jars, which are considered the forerunners of celadon. These are sometimes referred to as "proto-porcelain." However, there is a good possibility that the ash glaze of this jar is from ash that naturally adhered to the jar during the course of firing.
