Even among early ceramic ware imported from Korea, Ido tea bowls were especially valued. There are various theories regarding the origin of the name of this bowl, Agata, and its production date is also unclear. However, the name appears in the entry for 1578 (Tenshô 6) in Yamanoue Sôji ki, the diary of the tea master Yamanoue Sôji (1544-90), and so it is known to have been brought to Japan by the 16th century.
