Rihei ware (also known as Takamatsu ware) was made in what is now the city of Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture. In the mid-17th century, a potter, Kita Rihei, from the Awata area of Kyoto was granted land by the domain lord, Matsudaira Yorishige, to establish a kiln in Takamatsu, where he and his successors continued to produce ceramics.
