This roof piece from a pavilion-shaped reliquary closely resembles in shape, design, and metal carving technique, the roof piece of openwork gold-plated bronze reliquaries in the temples, Saidai-ji and Daian-ji, in Nara. Cloud scrolls with dragons and arabesques with lotuses are delicately carved into the metal, which has a granulated "fish egg" (J., nanakoji) surface. The piece convincingly conveys the feeling of Kamakura-period (1185-1333) technique of carved metal, rich in realism and technical virtuosity.
