For this armor from the Muromachi period, black leather thongs are used to lace iron scales (kozane) lacquered in black, with the upper chest area and part of the protective skirt (kusazuri) tied with red and white cords. Lotus scroll-shaped metal fittings (hasso kanagu), also called dehasso ('proturbing lotus'), with its outwardly projecting center, openwork arabesques, and carved chrysanthemums and bamboo rivets decorate the metal plates of upper cuirass area. These ornamental metal fittings and the raised lacquer design on the thin, long iron scales are characteristic of Muromachi period armor.
