This is a segment from Koiuta (E., Love Poems), the tenth book of Gosenshû (E., Later Collection of Japanese Poetry), which was originally in the bookbinding form called decchôsô. This edition of Gosenshû is also widely known as Shirakawa gire, since it was compiled in Shirakawa in the province of Mutsu (present-day Fukushima Prefecture). Attributed to the poet Saigyô (1118-90), it is presumed to have been copied in the latter part of the insei ("system of rule by retired emperors") period.
