These two Chinese quatrains with five-character lines (Ch., wujue, J., gozetsu) were composed for Nagao Uzan (1864-1942) by a celebrated priest of the Meiji period (1868-1912), Guan (1854-1904). Guan, whose lay name was Amada Kyûgorô, was a native of Iwakitaira in present-day Fukushima Prefecture. He entered the priesthood under the instruction of the monk Tekisui of Rinkyû-ji Temple in eastern Kyoto, receiving the name Tetsugen in 1887 (Meiji 20). He later built a hermitage called Guan in the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka district.
