Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), whose given name was Junqing and sobriquets, Cangshi and, later, Changshuo, was a native of Anji in the province of Zhejiang, China. Born into a literary family that dated back several generations, he excelled in composing poems. He was also accomplished in seal engraving and painting. He lived in Suzhou for a while but retired in Shanghai after the Xinhai Revolution. The Japanese calligrapher Nagao Uzan (1842-1942) lived in Shanghai for some time, and it was probably during this time that he became acquainted with Wu Changshuo. This work was perhaps given to the Nagao family through such ties of friendship.
