Cha Shenxing (1650-1727), born in Haining (in Zhejiang Province), was also known by his sobriquets, Xiachong and Tashan, and by his style name, Chatan. In 1703 (Kangxi 42), he passed the official bureaucratic examination. Cha Shenzing, a skilled calligrapher and a prolific poet, was considered one of the six great poets of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).
