Cha Jizuo (1601-77) was born in Haining in the province of Zhejiang, China. His given names were You and Xing, and his sobriquet was Yihuang. His artist names included Dongshan, Diaosuo, Yuzhai, and Xingzhai. He became a juren ("successful candidate of the provincial examination") in 1633 (Chongzhen 6). He was accomplished in the calligraphic style of Yan Zhenqing (709-84?), particularly in cursive characters.
