Xu You (n.d.) was born in Houguan (Fujian Province). He went by the style names of Youjie, Jieshou, Jiemei, and Ouxiang. His first teacher was the late-Ming dynasty (1368-1644) calligrapher Ni Yuanlu (n.d.). Xu You was skilled in painting, poetry, and calligraphy. He left many refined works, exemplified by those in the continuous cursive style (Ch., lianmiancao; J., renmensô). This poetic improvision, "Taking a short rest on the River Zaijiang," was written on the river bank and presented to a certain Gongyang.
