Gao Panlong (1562-1626) was born in Wuxi. He is known by the style names, Cunzhi and Jingyi. He served as a government official during the Wanli era (1573-1619) of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), and was well known as both a Confucian scholar and a skilled calligrapher. The powerful brushstrokes seen in this poem of four stanzas of seven characters each, written in the semi-cursive script (Ch., xingshu; J., gyôsho) exemplifies Gao Panlong's calligraphic style.
