Wang Ao (1450-1524) was born in Suzhou, in the county of Wu (Jiangsu Province). His style name was Jizhi and his sobriquet, Shouxi. In 1475 (Chenghua 11), he passed the official Chinese bureaucratic exam. Wang Ao is known for his concise and powerful brushstrokes reflecting calligraphic styles of the Jing (264-420) and Tang (618-907) dynasties.
