In this work, a handwritten poem by Emperor Gomizunoo (1596-1680, r.1611-29) appears on shôshikishi, or "small colored cardboard." The carefully-considered arrangement of letters on shôshikishi is quite beautiful. Being a skillful calligrapher, Emperor Gomizunoo left behind a number of calligraphic works in various styles; this work, with its delicate atmosphere, displays the tastes of the imperial court during the early Edo period (1615-1868).
