The Biography of the Tripitaka Master of the Great Cien-si Monastery (Ch., Da ciensi Sanzang Fashi chuan; J. Daijionji Sanzô Hôshi), in ten volumes, is a detailed record of the life of the Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzhuang (J., Genjô, 600-664). Volumes one to five trace the first part of his life from his birth until his return to China, after his pilgrimage in 645 to India and Central Asia (645). The last five volumes cover the rest of his life, including his return to China and his extensive translating of the sutras he brought back from India. This scroll, which is stamped with the red seal of Kôzan-ji Temple, in Kyoto, is thought to have originally been part of the Hôryûji edition (designated an Important Cultural Property).
