The Ato clan were the maternal relations of esoteric Shingon master Kûkai (posthumously known as Kôbô Daishi; 774-835). After Kûkai became abbot of Tô-ji Temple, generations of the Ato members served as wardens (J.,shigyô) of the temple. These priests were in charge of the main Buddha image, ritual objects, Buddhist documents, etc., that belonged to the temple. Thus many historical documents related to their temple duties have remained in the possession of the Ato family.
