Kumazawa Banzan (1619-91), whose given name was Hakukei and pseudonym, Sokuyûken, was born in Kyoto. He studied under Nakae Tôju (1608-48) of the Wang Yangming variety of Neoconfucianism (J., yômeigaku) and worked for Ikeda Mitsumasa (1609-82), lord of Okayama. He was arrested for publishing Daigaku wakumon, a book on theory of economic policy in which he openly criticized the government, and was confined in Koga Castle, where he died.
