This gogon zekku, or Chinese quatrain with five-character lines, was composed by the Confucian scholar Hirose Tansô (1782-1856). A native of Hita in Bungo Province (present-day Ôita Prefecture), Tansô studied under Kamei Nanmei (1743-1814) and was famous as a scholar in the Kyûshû region, being employed by the lord Ômura from the province of Hizen (present-day Nagasaki Prefecture) and the lord Funai from Bungo. He had a free and easy calligraphic style.
