The artist Hon'ami Kôetsu (1558-1637), one of the three great calligraphers of the Kan'ei era (1624-44), wrote this letter to a certain Kichizaemon to express his delight in the two tea bowls that the latter had made. Successive heads of the Raku ceramic family took on the name Kichizaemon, hence, the receiver of this letter may have been the second Raku head, Jôkei (1635). This missive is historically interesting in suggesting Kôetsu's connection to Raku family and in demonstrating his interests in chanoyu (the practice of preparing and serving powdered green tea).
