This sutra was copied by Emperor Fushimi (1265-1317, r. 1287-98) on the back of letters by his father Emperor Gofukakusa (1243-1304, r. 1246-59) for the latter’s spiritual repose. Such was the calligraphic skill of Emperor Fushimi that his handwriting came to be called the “style of the Cloistered Emperor Fushimi” (J., Fushimi-in ryû). This copy of the Lotus Sutra (J., Myôhô rengekyô, or simply Hokekyô) is one of the finest examples of a shôsoku (literally, “letter sutra,” a sutra copied on the back of a deceased person’s letters).
