This collection of Japanese and Chinese verses was named Ashide-e wakan rôeishû shô, since the verses were written on decorative paper with a design of reeds (J., ashide) for the base painting. The inscription at the end of the latter volume reveals that the collection was copied by Fujiwara Koreyuki (1149-1168) in 1160 (Eiryaku 1). The script consists mainly of onnade or hiragana ("rounded Japanese phonetic syllabary") and some sôgana ("cursive characters"). Although the title reads Ashide-e wakan rôeishû shô (literally "extracts from the collection of Japanese and Chinese verses"), it is actually a complete edition of Wakan rôeishû (E., Collection of Japanese and Chinese Verses).
