This is a biography of the priest Jien (1155-1225), who is well known as an author of the history book Gukanshô (E., Miscellany of Ignorant Views). Jichin is the posthumous name bestowed on Jien by Emperor Gosaga (1220-72, r. 1242-46). The colophon is dated 1245 (Kangen 3), revealing that this manuscript was copied within 20 years after Jien's death. As the earliest surviving copy of the "Biography of Priest Jichin," it is counted extremely important for the study of priest Jien.
