Chen Baochen (1848-1935), whose sobriquet was Baoqian, used artist names that included Jusuo and Tingshuizhai Zhuren. He became a jinshi ("successful candidate of the national civil service examination held at the imperial capital") in 1868 (Tongzhi 7). He was partial to making calligraphy on poems, particularly those of Tao Yuanming (365-427) of the Eastern Jin dynasty (317-420) and Wang Yuyang (of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). He created this work based on Tao Yuanming's poem Drinking Wine, 7.
