Tang Shunzhi (1507-60) of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) was born in Wujin, Jiangsu Province and went by the pseudonym (Ch., hao) Jingchuan. He passed the civil service examination with top honors in Jiajing 8 (1529) and had various posts, including editor at the Imperial Hanlin Academy and imperial inspector. Through diligence and integrity, he mastered the Chinese almanac, math, astronomy, music, geography, and martial arts, and was also skilled in caoshu, the calligraphic grass script. He authored Tang Jingchuan Xiansheng wenji (Collection of Writings by Jinchuan).
