Xu Tongbo (1775-1854) was born in Haining, Zhejiang Province, China. His name was originally Dachun; later he took the sobriquet (Ch., zi) Zhuanzhuang. He served as an official in Jiaxing Province. He was the nephew of Zhang Tingji (1768-1848), a collector of ancient metal and stoneware, who always consulted him on acquisitions of ancient works as he was well versed in the study of characters. Xu Tongbo was also an expert in zhuanshu (seal script) and was said to have carved many of Tingji's seals. A representative sample of his writing is Conggutang kuan shi xue (Study of Engravings from Conggutang Hall).
