Deng Yan (1743-1805), whose sobriquet was Wanbo and pseudonym, Wanbai Shanren, later changed his name to Deng Shiru. He had been partial to seal-engraving since his youth and excelled in the calligraphy of seal scripts (J., tensho). He led the movement for a revival of seal and clerical scripts. He never engaged in government service, spending his entire life as a commoner.
