Zhang Huiyan(1761-1802), a native of Wujin, Jiangsu Province, China, was also known by his sobriquet (Ch., zi) Gaowen and his pseudonym (Ch., hao) Mingke. He passed the civil service examination in 1799 and became editor at the Imperial Hanlin Academy. From a young age, he was well versed in poetry and the Chinese classics Wujing (Five Classics of Confucius) and Sishu (Four Books). He was especially skilled in the seal script, zhuanshu. His works include Zhouyi yu shi yi (Rituals of Zhouyi Yu), Letter to Yu shi, Yili tu (Illustrations of Ceremonies), and Zhang Gaowen yi quan quanji (Complete Writings of Zhang Gaowen).
