This segment from Wakan ryôei shû (E., Collection of Japanese and Chinese Verses) is widely known as Hisamatsu gire, since it was an heirloom of the Hisamatsu family in the province of Iyo Matsuyama (present-day Ehime Prefecture). The paper sprinkled with gold and silver powder, with a design of indigo and purple clouds floating in the sky, probably dates back to the early 12th century. This is a masterpiece of ancient calligraphy of the late Heian period (794-1185).
