The sutra was translated into Chinese by the Indian monk Paramārtha (499–569) and annotated by the Chinese monk Fazang (644–712). According to the postscript dated 1296, the reading of the characters is based on the Kumeta-dera Temple version and was added by the monk Kugyō (dates unknown) of Tōdai-ji Temple at Sonshō-in Temple.
