This calligraphy is attributed to the poet Asukai Masatsune (1170-1221). The poems have been copied within a frame drawn on the paper. Most segments from this edition of Kokin wakashû (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems) contain seven lines to a page, but this one has only six lines. Judging from the strength and force of the brushwork, this segment was probably written some time after the beginning of the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
