This poetry segment was originally part of the imperial anthology Kokin wakashû (Collection of Ancient and Modern Japanese Poems) copied in butterfly-bound book format, which was handed down in the Sakakibara clan. The poems were separated into fragments in the third year of Shôwa (1928), hence, these segments are considered to be from the "Shôwa edition." The calligraphy is in the hand of the renowned poet Fujiwara Shunzei (Toshinari, 1114-1204). His calligraphic style is characterized by strong, sharp brushstrokes, a feature easily discernible in the segments of the "Shôwa edition.
