Yi Bingshou (1754-1815) was a native of Ninghua, Fujian Province, who assumed the pseudonyms Zusi, Moqing, and Moan. He served as the prefectural governor of Huizhou and Yangzhou and is recognized as having been a good official. This couplet originally comes from the Hengfang Stele and its calligraphy is beautifully brushed in the Han-dynasty clerical script, lishu (J., reisho).
