The painter, poet, and calligrapher Zheng Xie (1693-1765)-one of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou-was born in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province, China. His sobriquet (Ch., zi) was Kerou, his pseudonym (Ch., hao), Banqiao. In Qianlong 1 (1736), he passed the civil service examination and served as the local magistrate in Shandong Province. After holding several successive posts, he returned to Xianghua. He is known for his distinctive calligraphic style, which he called liubu banshu, a cross between the formal clerical script kaishu (J., kaisho) and the official seal script zhuanli (J., tenrei).
