This scroll brushed in elegant semi-cursive script is a copy of ancient calligraphy by the Tang Emperor Taizong (598–649). As evidenced by the phrase “Southern Shen, Northern Guo,” Guo Fen and Shen Quan (1624–1684) were renowned calligraphers of their day. Ueno Riichi (Yūchiku) must have loved his refined brushwork, which retains a late Ming sensibility.
