The emperor Gao Zong (1711-99) was the fourth son of Emperor Yongzheng (1678-1735, r. 1723-35) and the sixth ruler of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). He ruled under the reign name Qianlong (1735-95). Known for promoting scholarship during his reign, he headed the editing of one of the largest and earliest encyclopedias, Siku quanshu (The Complete Collection of the Four Treasures). A poem of eight stanzas of five characters each, entitled "The Color of Grain," written in the semi-cursive (Ch., xing-shu; J., gyôsho) script, is mounted in hanging scroll format.
