Qing Shizong (1678-1735), the fourth son of Emperor Kangxi, ascended the throne as Yongzheng (r., 1722-35), the fifth emperor of the Qing dynasty. During his reign, Yongzheng established a cabinet for the military and took complete control over military and political affairs. This poem on how the grass is greener than the water of a valley stream was brushed in the semi-cursive xing cao (J., gyôsô) style.
