This copy of Notes on Calligraphy (Ch., shupu, J., shofu) by Sun Guoting (n.d.), a master of cursive-style calligraphy of the Tang dynasty (618-907), China, was made by Song Cao (1620-1701) when he was seventy-five years old. Song Cao, whose sobriquets included Binchen and Sheling, lived around the late Ming (1368-1644) and early Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, using the pseudonym Genghai Qianfu. He was well versed in literature and poetry and was known for his mastery of calligraphy.
