The leading Neo-Confucian scholar of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Wang Shouren (1472-1528) was a native of Yuyao, Zhejiang Province. He also assumed the pseudonyms Boan and Yangming. Considered the foremost philosopher of his time,Wang Shouren was also highly regarded as an official and general. This handscroll consists of five letters handwritten by him in a form known in Japanese as sekitoku (missives written entirely in Chinese characters.
