According to its colophon, this edition of Da fangying fo huayan jing (Skt., Avatamsaka Sutra, J., Kegonkyô, Flower Garland Sutra) was donated on the eighth day of the fourth month of Zhiyuan 28 (1291) by the priest Huiyue of the Chan (J., Zen) temple Guangming of Wanshou Monastery on Mount Jingnan in China. A few Korean examples of sutras on indigo paper with gold ink from the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392) can be found in Japan; however, dated Chinese examples are extremely rare. The painter's name, inscribed on the ornate frontispiece of this manuscript, which is copied in gold and silver ink, makes this manuscript an invaluable source for the study of calligraphy and early East Asian painting alike.
