The Chan (J., Zen) master Huiyue (Guangming Chanshi; n.d.), of Wanshouchan-si Temple on Mount Zhongnan in Chang'an, made a vow to copy this edition of the Flower Ornament Scripture (Ch., Huayanjing, Skt., Avatamsaka sutra, J., Kegonkyô) on indigo paper in silver letters in 1291 (Zhiyuan 8). Although the main text was written in silver paint, the characters for the Three Treasures (the Buddha, the Teaching, and the Buddhist Community) and the names of the various buddhas and bodhisattvas were copied in gold ink. On the frontispieces of each chapter are detailed scenes of Buddhist paradises in gold and silver ink, depicting the pilgrimage of the youth Sudhana to various spiritual advisors in order to seek the truth. These elegantly decorated volumes are rare extant examples of early sutras in Chinese.
