This is one of the volumes of the Lotus Sutra Ch., Fahuajing; Skt., Saddharmapundarika-sutra; J., Myôhôrengekyô, also known as Hokekyô) that the Chinese priest Yanxuandao (n.d.) copied some time after the twelfth month of 675 (Shangyuan 2) in a sutra copying hall in the Tang dynasty (618-907) capital, Chang'an. From the alignment of the postscript copied in the sutra, it can be inferred that this manuscript comes from the golden age of sutra copying at the imperial palace, making it an invaluable source in understanding the organization of sutra copying centers of the time. The manuscript was written in the standard, or block, script (Ch., kaishu) of the copyist Zhao Xuanxiang (n.d.) on finest quality hemp paper.
