This type of Natsume tea caddy was favored by the famous tea master Sen no Rikyū (1522–1591) as a green tea container in the tea ceremony. The back of the lid bears the signature of Rikyū’s grandson Sōtan, and the caddy’s box is inscribed by Kōshin (1613–1672), his son.
