The Issaikyô ongi (Dictionary for the Buddhist Canon) is one of over five thousand manuscripts in the entire Buddhist canon (J., issaikyô)-- including the tripitaka (J., sanzô); the "the three baskets" of the sutras, precepts, and commentaries--copied in its entirety by the Dharma Master Shikijô Ryôyû (1159-1242). Vowing to dedicate the sacred scriptures to his parents, Ryôyû conducted this monumental transcription over a period of forty years, beginning in 1187 (Bunji 3), at the age of twenty-nine, and ending in 1227 (Karoku 3), at the age of sixty-nine. No other extant copy of the issaikyô written by the hand of a single person has been as well preserved as this set.
