This sutra was copied from the early to mid-twelfth century at Matsuo Taisha Shrine in western Kyoto. Although believed to have been preserved in Honen-in Temple in Shishigatani (in the eastern part of Kyoto) until recently, in 1992, nearly four thousand scrolls of this set were found in Myoren-ji Temple. With this discovery, it was confirmed that this set of sutras were donated by the shrine head, whose family name was Hata, and his followers.
