Hitomaro (active 7th c.) is one of the most revered poets of classical waka verse. He is shown here in a typical pose said to be based on his appearance in a dream of Fujiwara no Kanefusa (1001–1069). Such paintings later became the object of adoration during poetry gatherings dedicated to this legendary poetic immortal.
