The center of this dish is adorned with the Chinese character for “pioneer,” encircled by stylized birds and flowers. This style of glaze application is known as wucai (“five color”) and comes from a kiln in Zhangzhou (Fujian province). Wucai porcelains were produced in large numbers for export to Japan.
