This sutra is a variant translation by Chinese Tang-dynasty master Xuanzang (600-664) of the Amitabha Sutra (Ch., Amituo jing; J., Amidakyô; also known as the Smaller Sukhavati-vyuha Sutra), originally translated into Chinese by Kumarajiva (344-413). The colophon indicates that the Japanese Shingon priest Kûkai (775-835) copied this volume; however, the authenticity of this attribution has long been doubted.
