This charming chest was probably used at tea gatherings-—passed around so that each guest could select his or her own sweets. Its handle is unusual in that it is not made of metal. This shape resembles an early sketch preserved by the descendants of Rinpa artist Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716), suggesting its design source.
